Welcome to the official website of the „Bulgarian Vegan Union“ association. BVU is an animal rights advocacy organization, aiming to spread veganism in Bulgaria. We are a union of abolitionist vegans struggling for the lives and freedom of animals. We at BVU are convinced that by being united we can concentrate our efforts against carnism much more effectively than by fighting separately. Due to this reason, the union’s main aim is to substantially grow in numbers.

Dancing Bears Park

A safe haven for former dancing bears in Bulgaria

DANCING BEARS PARK Belitsa is located in the Rila Mountains about 180 km south of Sofia, 12 km from the town of Belitsa and around 35 km from the ski resort of Bansko. The sanctuary is run in cooperation with the French Brigitte Bardot Foundation and is currently funded by both organizations. It comprises an area of 120,000 m², divided into seven open-air enclosures in which most of the bears live in pairs or groups.

Most of the bears were former dancing bears from Bulgaria, Serbia and Albania. But also other bears found here a forever home. The sanctuary offers its inhabitants dense forests and hills for roaming and seclusion, meadows and specially designed sunny places for rest, ponds for swimming and artificial dens for those bears who do not dig their own hibernation caves. Currently, Belista houses 23 bears.

DANCING BEARS PARK Belitsa can be visited in the frame of a guided tour from April 1st until December 1st.
